There were traveling bards who recited the psalms to commoners to better understand the Bible. The commoners weren't exposed to much of the Bible but they did know their psalms. Many priests were banned from even reciting passages in vernacular English. The Bible being translated to English is one of the harshest pieces of Catholic history with many burnings and the like. The Bible is a complex grouping of texts that were compiled over hundreds of years.
